On my third trip to Agra, I realized the city of Taj Mahal is not just about monuments, but it also brims with some of the most lip-smacking cuisines, from street foods to iconic restaurants. Agra was my last trip before lockdown in February when I teamed up with my friend Anupam Goel to do a food tour of Agra. Though it was still a food tour but how one could miss the historic landmarks being in such a city that hold great significance in the history of the country. Thus, while Anupam made a list of famous food eateries to visit in Agra, I worked on a historic tour of the city. And we started with Deviram Sweets.
When we reached Agra railway station, we decided to first visit Deviram Sweet, have a light breakfast there, and then leave for the hotel. Anupam had already booked a hotel online. You will find such breakfast eateries in almost every city which aren’t just some old-fashioned eateries but are a part of the city’s lifestyle. I visited twice the famous Shyam Sweets in Chawri Bazar, Old Delhi, and this sweet shop carries a century-old legacy with it. Old people share their experiences/memories with such places. What I observed, Deviram Sweets of Agra was no less than any legacy.
Bedmi Poori with aloo ki sabzi and lassi – the best breakfast offered by Deviram Sweets
Perhaps the most famous breakfast menu of Agra locals, Deviram Sweets is known for its much cherished bedmi poori which is served with hot aloo ki sabzi. You can get to see the bedai (bedmi) pooris being prepared in a big kadhai(big sized deep frying pan). The aroma of the bedmi pooris will surely trigger your taste buds. The hot gravy of aloo is poured over the pooris in a leaf bowl. The gravy has pieces of potato and a fine mix of spices. A spoonful of dahi (curd) is poured over this all to give it an extra flavor that goes perfect.
Buy a token and wait for your turn
Deviram Sweets is a famous brand in Agra and attracts a crowd of all age groups. The place is also recommended to visitors be it national or outsiders. When you reach here at breakfast or brunch time, you will find a crowd standing outside the restaurant waiting for their turn. The restaurant has a sitting arrangement as well but if you are here just for bedmi poori, lassi, jalebi, etc. then I guess you can stand outside and have your meal. There is a small outlet at the corner adjacent to the main building of the restaurant from where you can have your quick bites. We didn’t go inside since we were there have light breakfast and that’s it. So, you buy your token and wait for your turn.
After having a bedmi poori meal, we both had a Kulhad (clay cup) of chilled lassi to relax our throat. Being a Haryanvi, I am a fan of chilled sweet lassi, thick and delicious. However, the lassi here was average. It was the same which we can get at almost every place. When I visit Parathe Wali Gali in Chandani Chowk, lassi is the only thing I cherish most there.
How to reach here
To my mind, there is more than one branch of this sweet shop in Agra. The one I visited was on Mahatma Gandhi Road near Anjana Cinema. We hired an auto rickshaw up to this sweet shop from the railway station. If you are planning your trip to Agra, you should consider including this place for breakfast.
We moved to our hotel after having breakfast at this place. We booked an Ola cab and reached there. After resting for a while we moved out to visit our next place for lunch.
