Church Entrances and Towers:
Our Lady of Piety Church proudly boasts three main entrances—one at the front and two on the sides. Twin towers adorned with spear finials stand tall, showcasing the architectural fusion of New Roman style with Baroque features. The Corinthian columns within the church contribute to its grandeur and historical charm.
Special Features:
To the left of the main entrance, a staircase leads to the choir loft, adding a touch of elevation to the worship space. On the right, a remarkable Baptismal Font, seemingly carved from a single stone, stands as a testament to the church’s craftsmanship. The pulpit, featuring an
intricate design, holds the image of the patron, creating a focal point for spiritual teachings.
Exterior Statues:
Adorning the church’s exterior are two statues on pedestals. One pays homage to Fr Jacome Gonsalves, while the other honors St. Jose Vas, both pivotal figures in the church’s history and mission.
Memorial Plaque:
A solemn black marble plaque on the church wall commemorates Fr Jacome Gonsalves, an Oratorian Savant, and his significant contribution to the mission. The inscription details his departure to Ceylon in 1705, his illustrious service, and the homage paid by the Piedade parish on his 275th death anniversary in 2017.
Altars and Religious Artifacts:
The main altar, dedicated to the patron Our Lady of Piety, holds a commanding presence with her statue placed high behind it. A large tabernacle, supported by two evangelists, stands below, accompanied by images of saints. The church houses additional altars devoted to the Lord, Our Lady, and various saints. Notable artifacts, including a statue of Jesus in a coffin used during Holy Week, add to the spiritual ambiance. The sacristy, a treasure trove of religious artifacts, includes a significant wooden cross.
Feast Celebrations:
Deep fervor surrounds the celebration of the feast on the third Sunday of October. Preceded by the Maddi and a nine-day thematic Novena, parishioners engage in heartfelt observances. During the Novena, a statue of the patron is venerated within the church, and on the feast day, a solemn procession carries the revered image through the parish, marking a culmination of joyous festivities and spiritual devotion.
