Kibber, also known as Kibber Khas and Khyipur, is a picturesque village nestled in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India. Situated approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) from Kaza, it serves as a gateway to the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, renowned for its diverse flora and fauna, including a population of about 30 snow leopards.
During the summer months, Kibber is connected to Kaza via a bus service, facilitating access for visitors keen on exploring its natural wonders and embarking on treks to nearby peaks and the high pass of Parang La in the Zanskar range, which links Spiti with Ladakh.
Historically, Kibber holds significance as the last village on the traditional trade route to Ladakh and Tibet. This route, traversing the formidable Zanskar range through the Parang La pass at an altitude of 5,578 meters (18,301 feet), was documented as early as September 1847 by botanist Thomson. Notably, the village’s stone houses, distinct from the mud construction prevalent in Spiti, stand testament to its enduring heritage and resilience in the harsh Himalayan environment.
