Gurgaon is world famous IT and BPO hub. A place close to Delhi, Gurgaon falls under the National Capital Territory of Delhi, just some 30Km from it. Being in NCR, this place has much influence of the national capital. From lifestyle to business, this place has always attracted people not from different part of the country but also abroad. Gurgaon has done rapid developments in recent years in terms of both business and lifestyles. If you see this place ten years back, you will be amazed to see the rapid improvements. One of the biggest reasons is that it is close to the national capital. Secondly, this place has been connected to New Delhi with metro. Metro, the lifeline of Delhi, runs across both the city and has made convenient for the people to travel from Delhi to Gurgaon and vice versa. Gurgaon or Gurugram – What is the matter?
Recently, the government has decided to change the name and has officially announced that Gurgaon will be known as Gurugram. In order to know what exactly is going on with this name changing, we will have to dig past out of the mythologies. Let’s have a look at the naming of this place Gurgaon or Gurugram.
The mythologies say that Gurgaon used to be the village of teacher of Pandvas and Kauravas, Guru Dronacharya during the Mahabharta. As per the mythologies, they presented this place to their teacher. This is the place where Dronacharya asked for Eklavya’s thumb so that he could avoid any competition with Arjuna. Gurugram is supposed to be a historical and religious name of this place. This is the reason the government named it Gurgaon as Gurugram.
It is said that in ancient time Gurgaon used to be a part of Yaduvansi or Jadaun tribes. During the time of Mughals, the then Mughal emperor Babur annexed it. When Akbar ruled the country, Gurgaon was then under the territory of Delhi and Agra. When the British Rule came into existence by 1803, there was a treaty with Surji Arjungaon with Sindhia. At first, this place was used as to watch over the army of Begum Samru of Sridhana. Then the place was a part of district which later on broken down into praganas. It remained same till the first revolt of freedom. Later on, it was divided into five tehsils namely, Nuh, Palwal, Rewari and Firozpur Jhirka. When the country got independence, it fell under Punjab state. When Haryana was made out of Punjab in 1966, Gurgaon came under Haryana state. No doubt, be it Gurgaon or Gurugram, it will be a city with dreams.
Gurgaon is Haryana’s largest city and is also known as ‘millennium city’. People showed mixed emotions on Gurgaon’s name being changed to ‘Gurugram’. People specially the youth approached social media to show their disappointment, anger or whatever they had to express. #Gurugram went viral among the youth and they used this hashtag to show their emotions.
